    Tips for Auditioning?

    Hi,
I'm new to the theatre scene. I'm particularly interested in musical theatre and could use tips on how to prep for auditions. Do any of the local theatres offer prep sessions or classes? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Indianapolis Civic offers audition workshops for all of its productions, which you may find useful. Rebecca Devries-McConnell is an audition coach- you can find her here on IA under the screenname Rebthebecca. Other than that, I'd suggest getting familiar with the script and show you are auditioning for, and choosing a part to audition for rather than just going for any old role (unless you are comfortable doing chorus, which can be a great experience.) Pick your audition song according to the mood of the show and the range of the character which you would like to play- e.g., choose a song that shows off your soprano notes if you are going for Maria in West Side.

Best advice is to find some shows you are interested in auditioning for right here on IA. Feel free to ask the director right here questions. Then get out there and do it a few times. Nothing like experience.

    Audition preparation
There was an older thread with that title. I couldn't figure out how to list the direct link, but if you type those words into the search feature, it should come up. This is a frequently asked question from new folks. Good luck.

    Tips on auditioning?

What I have learning in auditioning for Musical Theater is this:

    1) Prepare more than they ask for. They may want two contrasting 16 bars songs but be ready to keep going. Always have a back up.

    2) Put together a "book" of songs that fit your voice in different styles. Have a full 32 bars, 24 bars, and 16 bar "cuts" ready. Place this is a binder with easy to read directions for your accompianist.

    3) Research. Research the show and the characters. Go in with an idea of the style and sound of the show and match it. Unless they ask you to sing from the show DON'T.

    4) Don't wear a costume. Feel free to dress the part but don't come AS the part. Let them decide if you are the part or not.

    5) Have a resume. This includes your name, phone, email, height, weight, age, dance ability, vocal range, and any credits you may have. An example of headings may be MUSICAL THEATER, CONCERTS, RECORDING, FILM/TV, AWARDS, REFERENCES, ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, SPECIAL SKILLS. If you don't have a lot of experience just put what you have and be proud of it!

    6) Bring a photo. Find a friend and get a shot of you from the waist or chest up in color. "Professional" or not the directors need to remember your face!

    7) SMILE. This is the biggest one.

    8) Say thank you to everyone that is in the room. Directors, accompianist, choreographer, etc.

    9) Remember to have fun. One of the greatest joys is to be onstage. Live it up.
