    Barbara as Mama Rose???

Yes. You read that right. Barbara Streisand has stated today of making the movie of GYPSY with her as Mama Rose. She will NOT direct it. Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents have met with her. This is confirmed by Warner Bros. and New York Post. Get this...they are thinking of Tom Hanks as Herbie.

    Ok. Talk amoungst yourselves.

Will she be playing Grandma Rose? What sixty something woman has teenage daughters?? I personally think she is way too old for the part........ And in film unlike theatre the camera is right there in your face. Maybe it's just me.......

    Granny Rose is right

The FINAL scene would be awesome...but I agree with William. While I love and adore Babs, she is way too old for the role.

Age is a funny thing. The role of Mama Rose takes her from when her kids are very young, until the time when Louise is in her prime.... which I assume is in her late 20's or 30's. So, by the end of the film, Streisand would be about the right age.

It IS possible for makeup and special effects to make her look younger in the earlier parts of the movie. If Jeff Bridges can look 20 years younger in TRON, they can do the same for her.

    ...my humble opinion...

I wouldn't care if it were MY grandmother. I just want to see her perform in a musical again.

They could always film her through Vaseline and gauze, like Lucille Ball in "Mame." (of course, that was a wretched movie, in the end, too.)

However, I agree, she's too old - I also don't know that her style with a song would play as Rose - she tends to chew words and bend pitches quite a bit, and Rose is an in-your-face, bellow-it-at-you type.....I love to hear Streisand sing...in the right rep...just not sure this is it.

I totally agree with Kevin on this one. It would be Streisand's "MAME" if she did "GYSPY" now. And heaven help the director who tries to be in charge. No, I think she would be better for something like Sunset Blvd if her vanity would get out of the way. I would DIE to hear her say...."I AM big. It's the pictures that got small !" Or how about (in my sick mind...LOL) Joe says to her while they are watching "Yentl" "There's nothing tragic about being 50 unless you try to be 25. "
