Footlite Musicals will hold its annual Summer Children’s Workshop for children ages 6 to 12 for a three-week period from June 4 to June 22.
Under the direction of Tara Carson, students will learn about the processes and expectations of auditions, rehearsals, and performances for a musical theatre production. The workshop culminates on June 22 at 7:30 p.m. in a one-time final performance of the "
The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley, Jr.," to show off the students’ new skills, complete with costumes, make up, singing, and dancing.
Ms. Carson and her staff will build upon the current skill levels of each student in the areas of acting, music, and dance through rehearsals and workshops, expose students to the non-performance areas of theatre such as set design, costume design, and dramaturgy, and incorporate cross-curricular learning during the students’ summer vacation in order to expand their worldview, sharpen basic skills, and show them learning can still be fun.
As a result of participating in this workshop, students will be able to confidently audition for musical theatre productions; appreciate the work that goes into non-performance elements of theatre; develop characters more thoroughly and thoughtfully, and demonstrate knowledge of basic singing technique, stage directions, stage movement, and common musical theatre choreography.
All sessions are at Footlite’s home, the Hedback Community Theater, 1847 North Alabama Street, Indianapolis, IN. Sessions are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. During the final week, the Friday session will be conducted from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to allow campers to go home and rest before returning to perform
“Flat Stanley, Jr.“ in the evening.
During the daily sessions, students will be given a half-hour lunch break and will be expected to provide their own lunches. A refrigerator is available to store lunches.
The cost of the workshop is $200 per child. Registration and a meet-and-greet session will held Thursday, May 31, at 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the theatre. Final registration will be held at 8:30 a.m., Monday, June 4, prior to start of the workshop that day.

"Flat Stanley" is a beloved children's book written by Jeff Brown that has become a literary and pop cultural phenomenon, delighting readers and travelers all around the world. Stanley Lambchop is your ordinary, every day, run-of-the-mill 10-year-old: normal mom and dad, normal little brother, normal life. That's just the problem; for Stanley, life is too normal. He wants to travel the world, do something amazing, something no one's ever seen before. One night, the bulletin board on the wall above Stanley's bed comes loose and falls right on top of Stanley! The next morning, Stanley Lambchop wakes up flat. Not just a little flat, but really flat!
In a whirlwind musical travelogue, Stanley, the ultimate exchange student, scours the globe for a solution to his unusual problem. He's stamped, posted and cancelled from Hollywood to France to Honolulu and beyond. And whether he's thwarting a robbery at the Louvre Museum in Paris, or 'hanging ten' off the coast of Hawaii, Stanley is closing in on his goal of being a three-dimensional boy once more.
