    JUNE 14 - 24, 2012
    Directed by Danny Russel
    ADULTS $15
    SENIORS (62+) & STUDENTS $12

Winner of the American College Theatre Festival, this marvelous play depicts a small Indiana town during the summer of 1932. An itinerant preacher drops in and befriends a boy named Buddy, who’s mentally impaired since he nearly drowned as a toddler and lost his mother in the river. Consequently, Buddy is deathly afraid and hasn’t bathed in 12 years but is miraculously bestowed with the gift of divining water. His burgeoning relationship with the preacher focuses on water’s symbolic power – how it heals, cleanses, blesses, gives life, and ultimately takes it away.

CARMEL COMMUNITY PLAYERS & JANUS DEVELOPMENTAL SERVICES PARTNER ON "THE DIVINERS"

Carmel Community Players, Carmel’s oldest continuously performing community theater group, will partner with Janus Developmental Services to raise money for and awareness about Janus’ services to developmentally challenged citizens of Hamilton County during the June 14 to 24 run of “The Diviners” at the Carmel Community Playhouse, 14299 Clay Terrace Blvd, Suite 140, in Carmel.

“The Diviners,” which was written by Jim Leonard, Jr. when he was a 19-year-old student at Earlham College, is set in rural Indiana at the beginning of the Great Depression. It is the story of Buddy, a mentally challenged teenager who suffered brain damage in a near drowning accident that also killed his mother, and his relationships with the people who live around him in the fictional town of Zion, Indiana. The original 1980 production featured pre-“Cheers” Woody Harrelson in the role of a preacher questioning his faith.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us both,” Rich Phipps, CCP president, explained. “Buddy is both the central character and moral compass of ‘The Diviners.’ We wanted to use that aspect of the play to increase public awareness of the services offered to young people like Buddy through organizations like Janus.”

“We are very excited about working with Carmel Community Players on this production,” Teresa Steege, Senior Vice President of Janus Developmental Services, Inc. said. “This is a wonderful opportunity to increase community awareness regarding our programs and services through the theater medium .

“We are sincerely grateful to be chosen for this honor,” Steege continued. “Without valuable community partners such as the Carmel Community Players we could not make such an incredible difference in the lives of children and adults living with disabilities.”

According to Phipps, during “The Diviners” CCP will contribute $1 for every ticket sold to Janus. It will also take cash contributions and sell handicrafts made by Janus’ clients before and after the show and during intermissions. In addition, following the Sunday matinees on June 17 and 24, representatives from Janus will talk to the audience and answer any questions they may have.

“We hope the whole community comes out to see this play and to support Janus,” Phipps said. “’The Diviners’ is a deeply moving, quintessentially Hoosier play and we are so honored and pleased to be able to present it.”

“The Diviners” will be performed June 14 thru 24 Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and on Sundays at 2:30 pm. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors 62 and older and students. They can be purchased online at http://www.carmel players.org/tickets or by calling the box office at (317) 815-9387.
