"The Nerd"--presented by the CrazyLake Acting Company

    The Nerd!!!

    The CrazyLake Acting Company
will present Larry Shue’s “The Nerd” at the HJ Ricks Centre for the Arts at 122 West Main in Greenfield, August 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, and 12.
“The Nerd” tells the story of Willum Cubbert (played by Trever Brown) who has long wanted to meet the man who saved his life in ‘the War’. His wish comes true when Rick Steadman (Corey Yeaman) shows up for an ‘extended’ visit during a birthday dinner party with his friends Axel Hammond (Brent Oliver) and Tansy McGinnis (Chris Vetters), his boss (Lee McCarty) and his wife and son (Jan Hodson, Gavin Spegal). Willum is ever the gentleman as Rick leads the group through a nonsensical game of ‘Shoes and Socks’, involving the removal of footwear, paper bag masks and a bible. Needless to say, the evening ends abruptly in disaster. Throughout the course of the show, social misfit Rick continues to impose himself into every aspect of Willum’s life, embarrassing him, destroying his relationships, interfering with his career, and eventually driving Willum to question his sanity in this madcap comedy of manners performed by the comedic brilliance of the CrazyLake Acting Company.
Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. $10 advance sale tickets are available online at www.crazylake.com or at the door for $12. Visit the website or e-mail Chris@crazylake.com for more information.

CrazyLake Strikes Comedy Gold With "The Nerd"

Most theatre people will tell you that comedy is much harder than drama. Drama is filled with long looks, dramatic pauses, meaningful silences and plenty of time to pull your thoughts together for your next line. Comedy, on the other hand, requires split-second timing.
Just ask Corey Yeaman who has been cast as Rick Steadman, the title character in “The Nerd”. “It’s all in the timing,” he says. “and comedy, more than drama, feeds on the response of the audience. The audience actually directs the flow of the performance with their laughter. In comedy, it’s a different show every night and you really have to be on your toes.”
Lee McCarty, 40-year-theatre veteran, who plays Ticky Waldgrave, agrees. “Definitely comedy is harder. Comedy elicits a natural, almost automatic response that--if the cast is good--is maintained throughout the performance.”
Comedy is definitely the favorite among the CrazyLake actors. “We just have so much fun in rehearsal,” says Trever Brown, who plays lead role Willum Cubbert. “It’s hard to keep from breaking up. Our director has been getting after us about that. She says our job is to entertain the audience and not each other, but it’s hard to keep a straight face sometimes.”
“Rehearsals are a lot of fun,” adds director Christine Schaefer, “especially with this amazingly creative cast. They come in every night with something new and funny they want to try out in rehearsal. For example, Jan Hodson, who plays Clelia, saw something on an infomercial that she thought would be a great addition to her character’s action. She tried it out--and after we all stopped laughing, we agreed it was ‘a keeper’. But,” laughs Schaefer, “you’ll have to come and see the show if you want to know what it is. No spoilers here.”
With a four-year history of comedies and entertaining productions that includes “Run For Your Wife”, “Rumors”, “Steel Magnolias”, “The Odd Couple”, and “Inspecting Carol”, “The Nerd” is sure to another CrazyLake on-stage hit and audience members are sure to talk about for months to come.
Performances are August 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, and 12. Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. at the HJ Ricks Centre for the Arts located at 122 W. Main St. in Greenfield. Call 317-477-2787 for more information or to reserve $10 tickets in advance or purchase them at the door for $12. Don’t miss it!
