Arsenic and Old Lace at Epilogue, Sept. 7-23

Epilogue Players will present Arsenic and Old Lace, the hilarious comedy by Joseph Kesserling September 7 through September 23, 2012 at the Epilogue theatre, 1849 North Alabama. William Andrews will direct and Jackie Cramer will produce. Cast for the show is listed below.

Arsenic and Old Lace, which originated on Broadway in 1941 and starred Boris Karloff as Johnathan, is probably best known as a movie with Cary Grant as Mortimer Brewster and Josephine Hull and Jean Adair as his aunts Abby and Martha Brewster, genteel ladies with some unconventional ideas for aiding lonely old men. A perennial favorite in community theatre, it features a brother who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt, another brother whose doctor is influenced by movie monsters, and a window seat which conceals a secret. There are also frequent references to elderberry wine flavored with just a pinch of arsenic.

Reservations are recommended for all performances and are available at (317) 926-3139 or epilogue.players@yahoo.com.

I'm interested in keeping other people from building Utopia, because the more you believe you can create heaven on earth, the more likely you are to set up guillotines in the public square to hasten the process. "-- James Lileks

William Andrews, director of Arsenic and Old Lace, is a graduate of Indiana-Purdue at Ft. Wayne. Though his degree is in musical theatre direction, he likes classic comedies, too. Staff members have often remarked on his habit of studying the script even after rehearsals begin. His latest credit at Epilogue is as director of Remember Your Hit Parade? revue in January. He has performed and/or directed at the Wagon Wheel in Warsaw IN and at Footlite Musicals, Center Stage Productions, and Wayne Township Educational Foundation summer productions.

Director Andrews raves that his cast is intelligent as well as talented. One assumes that this means they can learn lines and blocking. Come test that assumption--September 7-23, epilogue.players@yahoo.com or 926-3139.

Joan Rapkin plays the slightly out-of-touch Martha. Not so enigmatic as her last appearance on the Epilogue stage, as Millie in Hot l Baltimore, but decidedly more deadly.

Millie in The Hot L Baltimore wasn't enigmatic, she was just misunderstood. And if you think she was misunderstood, wait until you see Martha and Abby!

Remember--the Friday after Labor Day. September 7-23.

Eric Evans is Mortimer Brewster, happily engaged to Elaine, frantically concerned about the bodies in the basement.

This script is one of those that has held up for a couple of generations now, always fresh, always funny.
