    Looking for Pirate costume!

    Ok... I'm a freak... I know.

Last Halloween I dressed up as Jack from Pirates of the Caribbean. it was a rockin cool costume from Disney! Anyone who was at the party would agree.

I would love to have (or make ) a costume that is replica quality that I can have and wear to costume parties etc.

How hard would it be to sew and make an old pirate costume? Let's face it... these guys had some pretty shabby pants and how hard would it be for an idiot like me to buy the materials and sew it?

Shouldn't be hard at all. The clothing back then was much simpler than the Disney version (although not as flashy)!

    Good luck with it.

Simplicity patterns #4923 has the whole Johnny Depp thing going on. Check it out at Wal-Mart or JoAnn's or on-line. Just as everything else in life, it's all in the details. That might be the hardest part.

    peter pan

isn't there a theatre that's doing peter pan this summer? Find out how they're making their costumes.

I was Smee in Peter Pan. I was a pirate wench. It was awesome.

Sounds strange... but check out Hot Topics in the Castleton Mall for your pirate accessories. They have a lot of stuff that would probably work.

And I agree with Connie. The pattern she mentioned is great and they have a pirate wench version too!

How to put together a cheap but great costume

I costume a lot of shows on shoestring budgets. We are doing Peter Pan this summer. This is how I am doing it.

Decide what kind of pirate you want to be.

For Hook I did buy a wig because I was going for a certain look but it wasn't that expensive, about $15. For the jacket I found a woman's button down dress without a collar. I took off the buttons and replaced with big brass buttons and sewed some gold brick brack (you could glue this on too) and put lace inside the sleeves. Tie another piece of lace around the turned in or cut off collar of a white shirt to make an ascot. Knicker up some pants, this can be done with a rubber band and white socks and black shoes. I found a bold red/gold vest to go underneath and finish off with a big black belt. You can then ad a pirate hat and voila.

If you want a basic pirate, find some black pants and cut off zig zag just below the knee, wear black shoes no socks. Find either a white or a red/black striped shirt and tie a colored sash around the waist of the shirt when it is untucked. Tie on a red bandana to the side. Add an earring or an eye patch.

I do all of my shopping at Goodwill or the fabric store. Find an inspiration picture of what you want to look like and create those pieces from used clothing items - beware it is addicting.
