Auditions for "My Favorite Year" at Footlite Musicals

Footlite Musicals will conduct open auditions for its Indianapolis premiere production of “My Favorite Year” on Sunday, December 10, and Monday, December 11, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. both evenings at the Hedback Community Theater, 1847 North Alabama Street, Indianapolis, IN.
Auditioners ages 16 to 80 are requested to prepare a song not from the show containing one verse and one chorus which best suits their voice. An accompanist will be provided. Auditioners should also come dressed to be able to dance and should bring a list of schedule conflicts. Rehearsals are slated to start Monday, January 8, 2007.
“My Favorite Year” will be presented March 9, 10, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24 and 25, 2007, under the direction of Kevin D. Smith. Smith is seeking a cast of 14 men and 11 women. For additional audition information, visit the Footlite Musicals’ website at www.footlite.org or contact Smith at (317) 570-9192 or at figarokds@aol.com.

“My Favorite Year” is based on the hit 1982 motion picture of the same name, which starred Peter O’Toole and Mark Linn Baker. The musical has a book by Joseph Dougherty, music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. Flaherty and Ahrens are the songwriting team responsible for the musicals “Ragtime” and “Once Upon This Island.“Benjy Stone, a freshman writer on TV’s King Kaiser Comedy Cavalcade,” is assigned the daunting task in 1954 of baby-sitting veteran Hollywood swashbuckler Alan Swann while he is doing a live guest appearance on the show. The effort to keep the reckless Swann off the booze and out of the papers during the rehearsal week nearly drives Benjy to the brink, when he’s given an unexpected glimpse into Swann’s broken heart that teaches him about human frailty, tragedy, comedy, love -- and about what made 1954 his favorite year.

Further information - full rehearsals will probably not start until 1/15, but I may work with principals the week of 1/8 - hence the difference in start dates between my posts.

Also, as mentioned in a different thread - prepare a song that suits you but also suits the show, which is set in 1954 - songs from "Rent," "Aida," "Wicked" are really not 50's appropriate, and in most cases don't audition well as the accompaniment as written is NOT what you're used to hearing when you sing along with the CD. Then, the accompanist can't help you and you both end up looking bad.

If this show comes close to the movie, it's a must-see.

Actually, it's pretty true to the movie - minor subplot changes but pretty true to form - it's a very funny show - I'm really excited to direct it!

Come on out to the auditions!

Remember they're Sunday and Monday! (12/10 & 12/11)

I can answer that one, Stephen.

I'm directing and vocal directing, Deb Farmer was going to conduct the orchestra, but as she's been tapped to music direct "Nunsense" for Civic (yay for Deb!), I'm going to have to replace her. I've got a few people in mind, but am waiting for a one to check their calendar.

Deb Stafford is my producer
Vickie Klosky is the choreographer
I designed the set
Michael Jones is the technical director
Jeff Farley is the costumer

My stage manager is also checking a calendar - otherwise, I've got backups.

The lighting designer agreed to do the show several months ago, and I need to get back to him with some details and make sure it still works for him. So I won't post that name yet.

Anything else you want to know?

Kevin
